Lamu port gains traction as regional transhipment hub as MV Hong Kong Bridge docks

Lamu Port General Manager Vincent Sidai welcomed the development, calling it a positive indicator for the facility’s future.

The port of Lamu has taken a step forward in cementing its role as a regional transhipment hub following the arrival of the MV Hong Kong Bridge, which docked with 371 TEUs of cargo bound for Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The vessel completed a week-long voyage from Jebel Ali, UAE, to make its debut call at the port.

At 265 metres long and 34 metres wide, the MV Hong Kong Bridge ranks among the largest vessels to berth at Lamu port, marking a new chapter in its operations since it became operational.

Lamu Port General Manager Vincent Sidai welcomed the development, calling it a positive indicator for the facility’s future.

“The arrival of MV Hong Kong Bridge demonstrates that global shipping lines are recognising Lamu as a viable alternative for regional trade,” Sidai said.

“We expect more vessels to follow as we continue positioning Lamu as a key gateway for East and Central Africa.”

Sidai described the development as a “good sign” for business, expressing optimism about the port’s growing role in handling transhipment cargo.

Developed under the LAPSSET Corridor project, Lamu port is designed to offer an alternative gateway for cargo destined for East and Central Africa, complementing the port of Mombasa.

Despite initial hurdles, the port has begun to attract increased traffic, raising its profile as a strategic maritime hub.

With evolving global trade patterns, Lamu port’s ability to secure a steady flow of transhipment business will be key to its success.

According to port stakeholders, the arrival of MV Hong Kong Bridge is seen as a clear signal that Lamu is gaining traction among regional and international players in the logistics sector.
